Reciprocity

Reciprocity graphicToday’s Show Up! Journal power words: I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the notion that as we progress, what’s most important is how much we give and how much we help. I think it’s true. I think generosity, kindness, compassion, and a giving nature are some of the best and most notable characteristics we can possess. However, we must also remember that giving endlessly without refilling the well somehow, whether it is from our own doing or from getting that reciprocity, will eventually empty us.
So, we must give and also make sure that when we give that those interactions are part of a two-way interaction and not a one-way flow. Certainly, there are some, many, to whom we give who will not be able to reciprocate. But those who can return the gifts? It is incumbent upon them to do so. And if, over time, they don’t? Then, we need to decide just how prominent we want them to be in our lives. If the road to hell is paved with good intentions, I’d say the road to heaven must be a two-way street.
