How Being Like Luke Skywalker Changes Your Clarity, Wisdom, and Decisiveness.

choose like luke skywalkerThis week’s quote: “You’ve failed, your highness. I am a Jedi like my father before me.”

Sometimes, I pretend I am Luke Skywalker. I know, I know. “Huh?” But bear with me. Choosing makes me struggle. I agonize, and I hit the breaking point while still being too afraid to choose – something. Then, a peace washes over me. And I fall off the peak on one side or another as I make my choice.

Over the years, I have termed those instances as my Luke Skywalker moments. I’m talking about the moment in Return of the Jedi when he is closest to turning to the Dark Side. He seethes with the power of it. One more step, and he will fall down that rabbit hole forever (to mix my metaphors). And then in an instant, he sees himself. He understands himself. He throws away his lightsaber, his last weapon, as he becomes a Jedi like his father before him. Come hell or high water, he now stands on one side. He has chosen.

Choosing

I have some such choices to make in the next year. I know that moment of clarity will wash over me as well. It hasn’t yet, but it will. In the meantime, I stand on the precipice. You can also use the Jedi’s practice of choosing. When you agonize over a choice, try to stop. Imagine being Luke Skywalker at his moment of greatest pain and let the peace of knowing who you are and what you will choose wash over you.

In your moments of uncertainty, you can choose, run away from choice, or hang over the precipice in agony. Or, you can accept the choice you have to make and come to a sense of peace about your situation. From that instant, you change. You get to start where you are and transform everything.

It is a breathtaking place to stand.
