How to Be An Expert at Networking

networking silence relationshipsBusiness networking benefits your business and your career critical ways. First, you gain the chance to meet others in your field. Some of the people you meet at networking events might be eventual mentors or business partners. At the least, you will become a face and name they recognize. Since we tend to want to do business with those we know, like, and trust, networking provides an opportunity to do just that. You can build authentic connections which are critical to success in every business.

Additionally, when you engage with people at these events, you also gain valuable insight into how you might be of service to them. If you know what they need and want, you can provide the help they need and build an authentic relationship based on mutual trust and exchange. This familiarity and knowledge will provide you with future opportunities to do business with them.

Do Your Research For Improved Networking

When you attend a networking event, do your research. Find out who usually attends. If you get names, look them up on LinkedIn and Facebook. You might find you already have things like your alma mater in common. That provides a terrific starting point.

If you don’t know anyone at the event, first stand back and observe. Assess the most gregarious people in the room. See how they interact. If the people break up into groups, circulate to each group. Stay on the outside edge and listen actively. Encourage the speaker with affirming nods and vocal cues. As you do so, you will notice that people will turn and look at you. Offer a smile and nod and assess their reaction. Don’t offer conversation until you’re certain about the topic and have received a couple of smiles and nods. Chime in at a pause in the conversation when you have something of substance to say.

Then, feel free to introduce yourself. Ask the people in the group what brings them to the event. Listen to their answers. Ask questions. Be genuine. Listen much more than you speak, and you will be the most popular person in the room.
