A voice talent’s tools of the trade: microphone, pop filter and sound-proofing

Do you get nervous before speaking in public or recording yourself for a podcast or video? Is it because you don’t like how you sound?

Always remember that unless you’re using a 5000.00 microphone, you aren’t getting a fair representation of what you sound like. So, be fair to yourself.

Having said that, here are six easy techniques to improve your voice immediately.

Use these every time you speak or present.

  • Remember to breathe. (Three slow, deep breaths before you start will help a ton.)
Keep your throat relaxed when you speak (or your voice will sound pinched).
Open your mouth wider when you speak. It will let more of your voice come out. (It sounds weird, but it really works!)
Do some tongue twisters to warm up your speaking mechanism before any recording session so you won’t be as likely to trip over your words.
    Here are some to try:

    • Minimal animal
    • Unique New York
    • Rubber baby buggy bumper
    • Rear wheel
    • Quick lip
    • Red leather, yellow leather
  • Stay hydrated. Keep a bottle of water with you at all times. Sip often. You’ll thank me. Bonus points if you squeeze a bit of fresh lemon into the bottle.
  • After any speaking engagement, gargle with warm salt water. Dissolve a quarter teaspoon of regular table salt into an 8-ounce cup of warm water. Gargle until the cup is empty. It will help keep the entire voice mechanism clean and will speed the repair of any micro-damage you might have done while speaking.

Oh! And a bonus tip: avoid dairy, chocolate, and sweet citrus fruits for two hours before you speak. They are notorious throat cloggers and will keep you feeling like you have to clear your throat every few minutes.

Take care of your voice, and it will take care of you.

I hope this list has been helpful. I want you and your voice to be at your best, healthy, and ready to bring your message to the world for many years to come. Do you know someone who needs to see these techniques? Share this with them, so they can improve their speaking voices too.
