  • Networking Without the Ick: A Creative’s Guide to Being Seen

    June 22, 2026

    https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-xwi7t-1af398a

Why your talent isn’t the problem: your silence is, and how to fix it without feeling fake.

Does the thought of introducing yourself at an industry event make your stomach drop?

You’re not alone, and you’re not broken. In this episode, you’ll learn why so many talented artists, playwrights, and creatives freeze when it’s time to talk about their own work, and exactly what to do about it. Drawing from real classroom moments teaching young artists who’d rather whisper their ideas at lunch than present them aloud, you’ll walk away with five practical techniques for building creative confidence, networking without feeling fake, and getting yourself into the rooms where opportunities for grants, exhibitions, and productions actually happen. If self-promotion makes you cringe, this episode will change how you think about being seen.

  • Raw, Unpolished, and On Air: The Case for Messy Creative Beginnings

    June 8, 2026

    https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-j8e2z-1ae1680

Polished creative work starts with messy, uncomfortable first attempts. This episode is one, and that’s entirely the point.

What would it take for you to pick up a creative practice you’ve been avoiding live, on mic, in front of your audience?

In this raw, unfiltered episode, Izolda does exactly that. She returns to guitar after months away, mid-episode, imperfect and unpolished. She reflects on grief, creative accountability, and why complacency quietly kills a well-lived life. You’ll walk away with one practical strategy for restarting a stalled creative practice: the accountability promise made publicly. Whether you’re a writer, musician, or multi-passionate creative entrepreneur rebuilding momentum after burnout, this episode meets you where you are. Because the return matters more than the absence.

  • Jumping Out Of a Perfectly Good “Airplane”

    May 1, 2019

Mostly, I’m thrilled we’re moving to New York. Mostly, I can’t wait to start this exciting new chapter. But I’m also a little bit afraid.
When Rich and I saw our aikido sensei for lunch they other day, I likened moving to New York to that time Rich and I went skydiving and jumped out of a perfectly good airplane.
“I’m Air Force,” she said. “And I want to know why you jumped out of a perfectly good airplane too.”
“Because I had to,” I replied. “No other answer than that.”
I feel like this move is at least a little like skydiving. Skydiving isn’t a dumb thing to do. Thousands of people skydive all the time and love it. And I did it and loved it. But there is a certain relinquishing of control that accompanies jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. That same letting go applies to this move. I have to let go and trust that the life I dream of will be one we can forge once we get there.
Our life here in Greenbelt is safe. And I’m betting I could keep doing it this way for the rest of my life and be fine. But I would always feel like there was something missing. I would always think that I’d missed out on something vital and crucial to who I am. I would always feel like I missed that last chance to take a leap of faith into my grand adventure.
I’ve been thinking this might be some sort of mid-life crisis. It’s not. And I don’t even think a mid-life crisis is a crisis. I think you get to a point in your life where you take stock of what you’ve achieved and what you haven’t achieved. And then you have to decide what you live with not having done. But those things you can’t live without having done? You’ve got to go do them.

New York will be hard work. It will also be something I’ve wanted since the the first time I saw this amazing city. When we immigrated to the USA, we came first to New York. When my family’s plane approached JFK airport, I saw the skyline and I fell head over heels. I promised myself then that I would live there someday. I had no idea of the city’s cultural or artistic significance (or what it would mean to me personally). It drew me like a siren’s call. That was 45 years ago, and I’m finally going to answer.

What is your “perfectly good airplane?” What do you dream of doing? Comment below and lef me know.

  • Know Your Tools

    April 15, 2019

How knowing what you’re using can revolutionize your work and your life.

Figure out what your tools can do. It sounds like a simple thing to say. But we often use tools we don’t really know. Think about something as basic to your work as Microsoft Word. You probably know how to do a lot. But do you know all its capabilities? What about PowerPoint? How well do you know everything it does?
I’ve used PPT to do the task in front of me but that’s about it. Then, someone advised me to go through every option on every menu and see what it did. I’m still working through it because there’s a lot of functionality. This new knowledge has already improved my presentations.
For example, I’m inserting a short animation into my negotiation presentation at Hood College tomorrow. I needed it to stop at the end and not rewind to the first frame like it does by default. And there’s a setting for that! Because I know that, I’ll be able to present my exact vision to the graduate business students.
When you know your tools, you don’t have to compromise your ideas. So, pick a tool and learn it. It will free you to create more effective and inspiring work.
