They Call It Synchronicity

You know those seeming coincidences that knock us upside the head and that bring clarity to murky situations? Or the ones that bring us to decisions or actions that must be taken in that instant if we know what’s good for us? They appear to give us an “I could have had a V-8” moment and then they slip away into what happened a few minutes or hours or days or years ago?

If what you just read sounds confusing, you’re not alone. Those “coincidences” are hard to write about and can be even harder to grasp. That’s because they are ephemeral. The show up in the blink of an eye with critical information or a crucial action and then they disappear leaving us standing in disbelief of how what just happened could have just happened.

I believe those moments are synchronicity. They are the universe’s way of giving us a tap on the head to listen up, to pay attention, and to take action right in that moment. The conflagration of events or people or circumstances in that one point in time is there for a reason. It is to show us the benefit of seizing the opportunity they present.

Here’s the tough part. We seldom see those instances for the opportunities they are. In fact, we often look at them and nod our heads at what we are seeing without realizing what a boon has just fallen into our laps. It is only after the fact that we consider all the details or circumstances that had to have occurred just so in order for us to show up and see them in that place and that time.

Think of this. Wherever you are right now, whatever else is going on in the moment you are reading these words millions or billions of people, thoughts, and events happened to bring you to this point in time and space. If you can see these circumstances for what they are, if you can be truly present to them, you will find the opportunity for growth and expansion in every instant.

And again, I come back to, how? How do we notice this synchronicity as it is happening in front of us, to us, in any given second? I believe we need to build the skills to do so.

We need to start paying a lot of attention to what is going on around us at all times. More importantly, we must pay a lot of attention to what is going on inside us at all times. We must become intimate friends of our thoughts and impulses because they are trying, hard, to give us information every second, every instant. We must become observers of our own lives.

And that means: check-ins! Before we can look outside of ourselves to recognize synchronicity working in our lives, we must first become intimate with what we want synchronicity to do in our lives. In other words, we need to know what we want and need. We must know well so that we can start looking outside of ourselves through the lens of what we want on the inside.

So, that is our mission for the rest of this day and the next. Pay attention to what you are thinking and wanting. Notice your cravings. Notice your needs. When you feel the thought of a need or want forming, stop and write it down. Write them down in a blank notebook (not your regular journal but a blank, separate notebook). You might go through a lot of pages. But do it anyway. You will see certain ones appear more often. They are trying to tell you something. They are trying to give you information. In order to get what we want, we need to know what it is, what it really is. Writing the desires down will help us identify them. They might not be what we thought we wanted at all. We will delve into this a lot more in the coming weeks.

Next time: We will start exploring how we can learn to pay attention to those desires when they are happening so we can write them down.
