Where Do You Find Your Heroes
I’ve always found heroes in the quiet places. They’re people who go about their lives and silently help others. So, any time I need a hero, I look to one of my favorite teachers.
I lucked out with the world’s great music and language teachers. They pushed me and encouraged me. And they opened worlds to me.
But I never expected them to be superhuman. Even as a child, I knew adults could be flawed and downright awful. Heck, I lived through a war zone and survived an abused childhood. So, I never expected any adult in my life to be perfect.
No one is flawless. And that means that we’re all capable of being heroes to anyone who isn’t as far along on the journey as we are.

I guess I don’t need a hero to be a hero 100% of the time who never falls and never fails. I need someone who’s flawed, who fails, and who gets back up and does it all again.
So, In that way, I’m never without them should I need them to look up to. The best is when I can meet my heroes on equal footing. I’ve had the good fortune to connect with my teachers as an adult. They have floored me that they remembered me. We’ve become friends. And I’m so happy that I’ve gotten to express my gratitude. They cared for me when I needed adults in my life to be stable influences.
I will be forever grateful.
