Words, Camera, Action!
How beloved movie and TV quotes can spark our creativity, inspire us, and improve our lives.
Welcome to a brand new feature on this site. If you know me at all, you know how much I adore movies. Particularly, I love the words characters say. Good screenplay writing will tug at your heart. It will send you to the depths of despair and then fling you up into the heavens.
Every Monday (Movie Monday), I’ll take a famous quote about communication, achievement, or creativity, and explore how it can relate to our lives. Also, I won’t name the movie until the following week, so if you want to guess (without peeking), comment. Once a month, I’ll draw a comment for a fun prize.
This week’s quote
“I really wanted to learn how to swim.”
David and Jennifer are trying to save the world. Their last hope has just vaporized before them. David sits on a log, hangs his head, and says those words.
This movie has tons of quotable quotes. There is a much more famous one towards the end. However, I’ve always been struck by this one. It teaches us not to put off our dreams and goals.
If you want to start something or learn something, begin. Now. Today. Don’t wait. Get started. Regrets are a terrible thing to live with. Certainly, the writers of this movie wanted us the audience to witness David’s regret. Additionally, the entire movie was making social commentary about the path the entire world was heading.
The moral of the story, for me, is don’t wait to start following your dream. And don’t put off what’s good for you. Do you know what that is? Do you know what you want and dream of? If so, get started. You don’t want to wake up one day, at 83, and have a pocketful of regrets about the things you didn’t attempt. If not today, when?
Sit down, right now, and make a list of your goals and dreams. Mark off the ones that you can try this year. Then, make a plan to start the work to achieve at least one of them. Make it small. You don’t want to take on becoming an astronaut with your first one. But start. What are you waiting for?
