Grow Your Listeners in this Super Fun Way
I tried something super fun this past weekend. While attending a conference, I hopped out of my comfort zone and asked people to do impromptu interviews with me. I wanted to get people’s thoughts and ideas on a super fresh and spontaneous way, boy did it work!
I did it this weekend while at a conference. I put together a podcast-in-a-box setup and took it to the conference. I interviewed small business entrepreneurs about how they tell their stories to their tribes and put the interviews together to form an episode. I set it up with five easy questions that I told them about beforehand.
The questions:
1 Your name
2 Your business name and what you do
3 What is your biggest takeaway from this conference?
4 If you could tell your tribe, the people you serve, just one thing, what would it be?
5 How can people find you (social media, website, etc.)
Super easy to do. I put in my usual intro and intro. Then, I introduced the episode so my listeners would know it was going to be different. And then I just ran the 2-4 minute interviews back-to-back. In total, I had 15 interviews for a length of about 54 minutes for the episode. If you focus your episode/interview questions on your podcast’s subject matter, you keep it relevant and exciting for your listeners. Also, you build your own tribe at the same time.
My equipment:
ATR-2100 microphone
MacBook Air running GarageBand
A pair of headphones.
The outcomes:
Participants loved having the exposure to my listeners (perhaps more customers for them). They shared the episode with their followers (more listeners for me).
Everyone went away happy.
One thing I’d add: listen carefully for the transitions. They often took things in a direction that wouldn’t lead back to the next question and since I wanted to keep things focused on communication made simple (the theme of the show), I had to break out my old radio DJ chops to make sure I kept things on track.
Next time you go somewhere, bring your gear and do impromptu interviews with people. It’s fabulous!
