Storytelling: tell your story

Published on Nov 25, 2017

Telling a story versus telling your story. When you tell someone else’s tale, you are more of an observer who is recounting events. When you tell yours, you plumb the depths that connect you to everyone who hears it. Whether your medium is the written word, painting, music, movement, cooking, or any other form of self-expression, if you tell it from your innermost being, it will impact everyone who witnesses it. If intent is everything, where your intent originates is the vessel that holds everything. So, the next time you tell any story, see how it connects you to your innermost being. Bring that up let it bubble fourth and see how much more you connect with everyone who hears it. And remember, we are all created beings. We are all meant to express ourselves. That might be the fundamental point of this entire podcast. We all can live a creative life.

Is it a block or incubation?

Published on Nov 26, 2017

Is it a block or is it incubation? Downtime in the creative life. Today’s words are about allowing yourself downtime if you are in the middle of a creative endeavor. I think sometimes the well runs dry and we need to take the time to fill it with new stimulation you stimuli. So, if your painter, maybe you need to walk around outside and see the colors of nature or the blue eyes of a passing husky dog. If you’re an accountant, you might need to clear your head so that you can come up with a creative and unique answer to particularly thorny issue. If you are a doctor, you might need downtime so that you can be a better diagnostician because you will look at things with fresh eyes. We all need time to replenish. Oh. I love that word. Replenish. Think about how it sounds. It’s like quenching thirst. So, when we take time to incubate away from our creative endeavors, we are replenishing our juices. We are quenching the thirst of our soul for new impetus so we can create more

Consuming creativity changing

Published on Nov 27, 2017

When Creative‘s make their art, they must decide if they are making it simply to create it or to sell it? Commerce and art can mix but which should evolve for the other? It depends on the impetus for the creation. They must also decide whether or not they are creating for short term consumption or long-term experience. I experienced this today and wanted to share the lesson I learned from it. I will put the link to the music albums I referenced in the show notes on

Know when to stop. And do so.

Published on Nov 29, 2017

Knowing when to stop. In life, work, love and storytelling, it’s crucial. At last nights Tim Ferris event in Washington DC, Tim had two guests: Steve case and M. Sanjayan. M Sanjayan was talking about knowing when to stop when you’re telling a story. It sparked in me a revolution of the mind and spirit because I think it’s not just crucial to know when to stop a story. It’s crucial to know when to stop anything you do. Whether it’s a joke, a drawing, a job, or a relationship, any of these necessitate knowing when to stop. It’s often only when we stop one thing before another thing presents itself and we can progress. Today, I announced that I’m stopping a huge portion of my career that I’ve been doing for 35+ years, as of January 1. It was a big decision, and I’m super glad I made it. Take a listen to my experience and I hope it helps you stop what you need to stop so you can begin something else. ❤

Purposeful speech and language

Published on Nov 30, 2017

Language evolves. Language is fluid. Sometimes, though, we speak or write and don’t think about the origin or the meaning of the words we say. Today, I was going to do a post on perseverance or sticking to your guns. And then I got curious as to where that phrase comes from. It comes from a man’s given to sailors to remain at their battle stations even when their ship was directly under attack. I want my language to be more peaceful than that. A few years ago, I decided to change well-known expressions into ones that were not violent.

I strive to be peaceful in how I present myself and in how I communicate. It isn’t just about being sweet or a pacifist. It’s about being compassionate, connected, and effective. I think if we all looked at the words we use without thinking, and made them more thoughtful, we could change the world.

Key to success: preparation

Published on Dec 1, 2017

Success tip: Preparation is key. Long-term, short-term, and in the moment. Today brings the beginning of high holiday caroling gig season for me. I lead and manage a caroling group that’s been performing in the Washington DC area for 14 years. As the leader, I must look at the long-term, short-term, and the immediate view of the group, our performances, the quality of our singing and music, and our reputation with our clients. The key to the success of this is preparation. I help the singers prepare every year to polish and perfect our performances. This year, like most years, we added new songs. Our newest offering is a Spanish piece that I arranged in three-part harmony. It has been getting rave reviews from our audiences. But, just knowing the notes is not enough. We need to know them so well that we can perform them with beauty and grace and blended harmony. The long term preparation makes that possible. Short-term preparation happens on the day of a job. I keep a suitcase. I

No Judgment. Just Self.

Published on Dec 3, 2017

Today’s episode features my new leading phrase. This phrase came to me in a meditation session this morning. It is, “No judgment. Just self.”
What would our lives be like, how much extra time and mental energy would we have if we didn’t spend any time on self judgment or self criticism? That’s the question that I grapple with in today’s mini podcast episode. I also do a quick review of the app whose link is below. It’s called meditation timer, and it is fabulous. I’m not getting any money to review the app. I just love it and find it incredibly easy to use and thought I would recommend it to all of you. Meditation is an incredibly helpful tool for people who are creative and people who are in business. If any of you who listen to me also follow Tim Ferriss’ podcasts, you will know that the vast majority of the successful people and movers and shakers he interviews have a meditation practice, a daily meditation practice. They say Fortune favors the prepared and I say sometimes you just get lucky. I believe we must be prepared in the macrocosm and hopefully get lucky in the microcosm. The lucky shot of the moon I described in the podcast is also in the show notes. You can find those at

Creative, admin & tech=success

Creative entrepreneurs wear many hats. Today, mine were creative, admin and tech. This episode of the podcast is brought to you by the woods in Greenbelt and the leaf blower machines. Hopefully you will still be able to hear all that I said, because frankly the blowers are out in full force.

Today, I had to put on one of my many hats that is not strictly speaking creative. Although, it does take creative problem-solving. My long-time, trusty computer bit the dust. And I had to figure out how to get back up and running. Knowing who to trust for good answers, knowing where to look for those answers, and a recent back up will save your life.

Easy tip to make art anywhere

Published on Dec 8, 2017

Quick tip to create art anywhere. Generating the creative spark. After my fabulous event at the community college of Baltimore county in Dundalk, I went to a restaurant that had an invitation written on a napkin. The invitation just simply said “art can be created anywhere.” And it invited the person looking at the napkin to go ahead and do so. That’s one of the reasons I love this small restaurant chain called Moe’s Southwestern Grill. They celebrate the creation of art in all its forms. This all reminded me of a game my husband and I play whenever we go to a restaurant that has paper napkins or better yet big sheets of paper that cover the tables. Take a listen to a quick tip on how to create art anywhere. Generate the creative spark and enjoy yourselves. As always, if you like the podcast, consider subscribing. Commerce & subjectivity of art

Published on Dec 9, 2017

I was reminded this morning about Barnett Newman’s painting that sold for $44 million in 2013. This made me think about the commerce and subjectivity of art. Yes, beauty and art are both in the eye of the beholder as far as I’m concerned. But sometimes I can’t help feeling manipulated by people who purport to know a great deal about art and the value they place on things like this canvas that I cannot comprehend. I cannot fathom how a canvas that has been painted blue with a white line painted vertically down its middle would be considered valuable much less the almost $44 million price tag it brought at auction. So many were the causes need support. That $44 million could have funded innumerable artist scholarships and arts education programs in public schools and provided art materials to people who need them badly in order to create. I know. I’m being subjective and possibly elitist. That painting has its place in the history and the annals of art. At its time, I

Art: freeing the caged bird

Published on Dec 11, 2017

Want to create art? What’s keeping you? A mini-rant on freeing the caged bird. For most of us, we have all the tools we need to be creative. So what’s stopping us? What’s keeping us from putting pen to paper or brush to canvas or stick to pots and pans? The more we make room for art in our lives the more we express the inner longings, thoughts, and ideas that most of us think and feel. Art is meant to be created. It is meant to be expressed. Great art taps into that Zeitgeist. And I think all art can.

Day job & art transitions

Published on Dec 12, 2017

A trick to transition between the work day and the creative life. Most of us who are living the creative life or trying to live the creative life have to make the constant switch between the day job and the creative pursuit. One of the things that I think we miss is that we don’t honor that transition. If we have to go to a day job, and most of us do, we have to be productive, creative, and effective in the day job. But then, that uses its own energy, right? So, at the end of the day job, we must take a minute to honor that having happened and then honor the transition from work or to Creative. This is a quick technique that uses a small, short meditation to help you honor that transition and make it effectively, efficiently, and with intent. Enjoy! Tips on getting through blocks

Published on Dec 14, 2017

I hope you enjoy this extra special double length episode of the C. zone. I started it about how to break through some of those blocks that keep us from creating. I was interested in small and quick techniques that will allow us to break free and create whether we are going to draw, write, paint, make music or whatever. Towards the end of the first segment I asked a question do you know why you’re doing it? And that inspired me to explore that, “why.“ Do we know why we create? Do we know why we produce? Is it for money? Is it to share an experience? Is it to share our story? I submit to all if you that if you know the “why” it will inform the work and will help you create and finish. As always, if you like what you hear, consider subscribing to the podcast. Sending you my love.

Contracts & Creatives.

Published on Dec 18, 2017

Contracting for creatives – it’s just good business. As a creative, you might not know what you’re doing when it comes to the business world. Educate yourself. Do it today. Don’t wait. It is good business to know how to navigate your way around a contract and how to negotiate one to begin with. There will be times when various people you are working with, as a creative, will want you to work on a handshake or a wink and a nudge or a lick and a promise. Don’t do it. Protect yourself and protect the client. Make sure every contract has exactly what you will do and exactly what you need from the client in order to do your job. Make sure you know dates, times, the layout of whatever it is you’re going to be doing, their expectations, your expectations, and the fee. There are a fair number of template contracts online. I will put some good ones in the show notes. Ultimately it’s about having a good, solid working relationship that you can nurture and grow with

“If not ‘heck yeah!’” Then no.

Published on Dec 19, 2017

If not ‘heck, yeah!’ Then no.” (Put it all to Derek Sivers’ excellent test) this fabulous lesson frees us up to dream better and to do better. The terrific Derek Sivers write about that test into his book, “Anything you want.” (Link in the show notes).

If you are faced with an offer, and opportunity, a requirement, a project, or any other possibility, put it to this test. Does it make you go, “heck, yeah!“ or, does it make you feel kind of meh about the whole thing? If it’s the former, go do it. If it’s the latter, give it a pass.

This morning I got an object lesson about this very thing. And I said no. That immediately freed me up to double down on something I’ve i’ve been dreaming of doing and so I started it. And I’m going to kick butt.

And I completely understand that there are times when we have to pay bills. I get it. And if you need to pay your bills, do that. But for everything else, put it to the test.

If not this door, another door

Published on Dec 20, 2017

Patience and commitment in art

Published on Dec 27, 2017

As an artist, you must both have patience and be able to commit to the lines of your work. If you are a writer, you must at some point commit to the written words that will be part of your piece. The same goes for line art, music, and any other art form. If you change your mind, you have to be able to modify. In the digital age, we can modify things as if they had never been. That doesn’t work so much with tactile art. If the art is tactile or permanent in any way, sometimes those changes are evident. Knowing our own creative process will help us know when to have patience and when to commit to the line and the piece. As an example, I talk about John water houses, the lady of shallot. I hope you enjoy today’s mini podcast episode and if you like what you’re hearing, consider subscribing. Until next time, I send you all of my love.

Patrons or independent artists

Published on Dec 28, 2017

As I spend the day soaking up the energy and creativity in old town Albuquerque, I am struck by the division between sponsored artists and independent artists. In history, artists have often had patrons or sponsors who paid their way but often dictated the type of art the artist could create. In the former Soviet Union, artists were also supported by the government, but could only create their art with a limited palette. As I sit on a little patio looking at the numerous galleries, I wonder which is preferable? Nowadays, most artists have to be business people as well. In fact, often they are often business people first. Is it better to do that? Is it more productive? Is it more creative? As a creative entrepreneur, I can’t help but wonder, which is superior?

Creative sensitivity

Published on Jan 1, 2018

The question I’m pondering today is how important is sensitivity to creative‘s? Do creative people fundamentally have greater sensitivities or greater acuity in their senses or greater emotional sensitivity? And if they do, does it translate that the best art is made by the most highly sensitive people? Some studies have indicated that the best Creatives are often sensitive and perhaps even depressed or distressed or under duress. In this mini podcast episode, I ponder the artistic sensitivity and a few ways to both mitigate it and utilize it in order to create great art. I also offer some techniques on how to address and care for those sensitivities that might sometimes lead to depression or sorrow. As always, if you like what you hear, consider subscribing to the podcast. Until next time, I send you all my love.

Focal necessity in art & money

Published on Jan 3, 2018

In today’s mini podcast episode, I look at the need for focus when creating art for commerce. I recently heard that saying that if you are trying to reach everybody, you’re likely not reaching anybody. I don’t have a citation and if I ever find one I will put it in the show notes. But I find this idea striking and important. As part of this thought process, I held a survey to find out which of three photographs people were most drawn to (See the show notes for the images at https://IzoldaT.com/the-c-zone/). One has an open view of the ocean and sky. A second one has an almost obstructed path towards the ocean and sky. The third one has a guided path towards the ocean and sky. People chose their favorites. Overwhelmingly, the one that had a guided path, that visually urged you on and yet provided a structure, was the favorite.

I think that is a big clue to how we consume, evaluate, and purchase creative works. I also think creatives can take a lesson from this revelatio

Raise your energy level now

Published on Jan 4, 2018

In today’s live, rock, real, and unedited mini podcast episode I talk about how to quickly raise your energy level when you are feeling down. In the northern hemisphere, we are going through a rough of winter. Right now, in Maryland, it’s particularly freezing and windy. That’s the kind of thing that makes you want to curl up in bed with a good book and not be terribly productive. If you are creative, and you operate well in this sort of weather, good on you. If you’re creative who doesn’t, like I am, you might have issues having the energy to achieve or accomplish a dog gone thing. Here are a few tips to help you immediately raise your energy level. Particularly, I talk about what you might want to do if you have hypothyroidism like I do. The thyroid is a tiny little bland but it governs a whole lot of our body systems including heartbeat, energy levels, and metabolic rate. And it takes special care. Daily creativity: it’s vital

Published on Jan 5, 2018

In today’s raw, real, and unedited mini podcast episode, I explore the necessity of daily creativity. We don’t have to spend hours being creative in order to reap benefits from using that part of our body mind and spirit. If we engage that part of our brain even for five minutes a day, our lives will transform.

When I was in New Mexico a couple of weeks ago, I saw some really cool alcohol ink paintings. I had already previously created something using alcohol ink of a sort and I decided to try my hand at this medium as well. All you need is a sharpie marker, rubbing alcohol, and a non-porous surface. Make daily creativity contests

Challenge yourself to be creative daily. Make it a contest where you win. It doesn’t have to be a huge feet every single day. You can challenge yourself to five minutes a day spent writing or drawing or dancing or making music or singing. As long as you get those juices flowing, you will win. And here’s the thing, if you do start, you will find that naturally you want to make your creativity and your daily creative practice more important part of your life. You will find that you begin to guard that time as SACRED. And you should. It is the truest expression of your innermost self. This morning I roused myself out of bed to take pics of the morning fog and instead found a buck in my backyard. See the show notes for the image. And remember: a daily creative practice ensures both progress and productivity. And that’s how we finish what we started. It doesn’t come in a blaze of glory. It comes with daily dedication and care. Comfort zone success?

If you want to succeed as a creative entrepreneur, you have to learn to get comfortable out of your comfort zone. It’s that simple. Whether you are a painter, writer, a musician or any other creative pursuits, you’ll be sitting in your bedroom doing it for yourself unless you take a courageous leap out of that comfort zone and network and extend your reach. If no one knows that you want to have your creativity out in the world, they won’t know to talk about it, to share it, and to spread the word. You have to help them. That means that you have to have confidence in what you’ve created. You must be willing to shout about it from the rooftops. That’s how it works. That’s how you succeed. In this 52nd episode of The Self-Made Creative five-minute podcast, I give you ideas on how. As always, if you like what you’re hearing, consider subscribing to the podcast. Letting go of your heartbreaks

Published on Jan 11, 2018

In today’s daily five minute podcast, I address letting go of heartbreak. I can certainly look at it from an emotional and relationship perspective as I believe we all can. However, for me today it’s about letting go of Creative heartbreak. If something doesn’t go the way you want, often it’s new state whether broken or smeared or smudged or wrecked in someway has plenty of lessons to teach us. You ARE the change!

Published on Jan 13, 2018

With the longer days here in the northern hemisphere, I have felt the change on the wind. To that end, I have made some decisions that are changing my life. I encourage you to make the change in yours. Every morning I write in my journal. As part of the journaling, I enter three gratitudes, three things for which I’m grateful. Today the first gratitude was for the change on the wind. I don’t know if it’s the longer days. I don’t know if it’s the spark of motion after the lull after the new year’s. I’m not sure what it is. But the change is here. We can scent it on the wind like a wild wolf in the forest. As always, if you like what you hear, consider subscribing to the podcast. There are plenty of times in our lives where we are the only ones who are going to do it. If you’re an entrepreneur, often no one will know if you don’t. So how do you keep yourself motivated? How do you keep yourself on track? How do you keep yourself honest if you have no one to report to? Well, you have to do it for yourself. Step-by-step. Take a listen for some ideas. Communicate with courage

Published on Jan 15, 2018

In today’s five-minute daily podcast episode, I explore communicating what you know, what you don’t know, and having courage with the mystery of that. Whether or not we are actively creating, we all interact with others with our work. We all have to communicate. And we all have to know what we know and what we’re trying to communicate. First step? Since your audience. Know what they want. Know what they need. And then tryTo help them get it. But what happens when you don’t know? What happens when you don’t know what they need? What happens when you don’t know what you’re doing? That happened to me and you all can listen to an example from my life and how as a child I let my classmates’ ridicule negatively impact my ability to communicate. There are many ways to alleviate a public gaffe and turned it into a positive experience for both the communicator and the audience. I didn’t know those at the time. Get on the same frequency

Published on Jan 17, 2018

In today’s five-minute, daily podcast episode, I dig into the relationship and relevance listening to singing and speaking. In any communication, we must listen to what we hear, imagine what we need to express and only then can we open our mouth’s to say it or sing it. In order to know when you are on the same page, or on the same wavelength as your audience, you must be on the same frequency. You must listen. If you are on the same frequency there is no communication tension. If you’re not, you will hear the Delta or the difference. The way to ensure that you’re on the same wavelength? Listen for when there is no Delta, difference, or tension. And then express yourself to achieve your goals. How to get from “No” to “Yes.”

Published on Feb 8, 2018

In today’s episode I explore the internal process that takes place when you need to get from no to yes. I’m working with an international team of educators and entertainers on a collaborative project where we go to schools and other area institutions and do good in our communities. As part of this, we engage partners in the community. Yesterday, I tried to get a partner and got aN emphatic, “no.” And then I turned right around and turned it into a different person’s, “yes.” It reminded me of a moment in my life as a teenager and how I pushed back fear and did what I needed to do. It was a simple step, but a profound one in my life. Take a listen to the podcast to get some ideas on how you might do this for yourself. Serve mindset: Pro/Hired Help

Published on Feb 9, 2018

In today’s episode I explore the difference in mindset of being of service versus being the hired help. First, I believe everyone in the service industry should be thought of as a professional and as being of service. I don’t believe in the words “hired help,” personally. But, sometimes when we are engaged in an exchange for professional services whether in the Creative industry or in something else, we are treated and recorded less respect than we deserve. I believe it starts with our own mindset first. I believe we should think of ourselves as being of service rather than the hired help. If we think of ourselves as that, we will change the paradigm between us and those with whom we work to elevate the experience for all.
