Work your strengths
It’s tempting, isn’t it, to try to do it all and to try to be all things to all people. But somehow that tactic never works. We are always left with that doubt that we didn’t do enough. And that is because we couldn’t do it. There was no way to live up to all of it if we tried to do it all.
More and more, we are learning that instead of spreading ourselves too thin and trying to cover all the bases, it’s better, more effective, and more successful to instead play to our strengths.
This took me a long time to learn. For years, for decades, I tried to do it all. Certainly, I advised my clients not to do that, but I did. And I paid the price. It’s only now, as I get older, and hopefully wiser, that I’m learning to pare down, to funnel down my skill set, my strengths, and my life so that I am focused on the goal.
It doesn’t matter what the goal is. What matters is that we’re focused on it with vision and strength of purpose. The upshot? Work to your strengths and find others who share your vision and who can complement what you’re already doing. It’s not about one person. It’s about many working as one.
